On average, you’ll spend about 8 hours each day sleeping. With only 24 hours a day, that means that you’ll likely be in bed for about a third of your life. I don’t know about you, but if I need to spend a third of my life somewhere, it better be a safe and non-toxic place. Unfortunately, when it comes to mattresses, there are some worrying factors to consider that many people simply aren’t aware of. Because of this, we decided to take a close look at Nectar, one of the most popular mattresses sold online, in order to find out if it’s safe for you to spend so much time on.
As Nectar mattresses continue to dominate online mattress sales these days, especially online, many are asking if it’s safe. Specifically, many people are wondering whether Nectar put in enough thought in creating a mattress that isn’t only comfortable to use and will last for many years but won’t have any adverse risks associated with prolonged use. As it turns out, a mattress can become a serious hazard over time, and with one-third of your life spent sleeping, this is a major issue. If you aren’t aware of these long-term mattress issues, prepare to be shocked! But don’t worry, you won’t have to put yourself at risk ever again.

How Does Nectar Make Mattresses Safe?
When it comes to mattresses, there are a number of factors that can cause trouble over time, going as far as affecting your health. Nectar has targeted these specific issues quite successfully, making a great case for upgrading your old mattress.

Safe Neck and Back Alignment in the Nectar Mattress
This is a major issue for many sleepers. Over time, sleeping on a mattress that isn’t aligned according to your body’s contour can lead to serious pain in your neck and back. In some rare cases, the tension caused by this misalignment can go as far as causing actual nerve damage along your spine. At first, you may notice rigidity, pain and reduced movement capacity, sometimes in a specific direction or side of the body. With time, you may experience adverse health-related effects such as exhaustion, reduced ability to concentrate and an increased likelihood to experience mood disorders such as anxiety or depression. If you feel back or neck pain on a regular basis or feel tingling sensations (usually at your extremities), it may be time to consider an upgrade, because your old mattress may be doing more harm than good. Nectar uses a combination of memory foam layers and a correct firmness level to ensure that you’re neck and back are getting proper support that’s specifically meant for your body. With time, pressure and body heat, the memory foams adapt to your outline and deliver the proper support. Safe Materials in the Nectar Mattress

There are a number of safety concerns to consider when it comes to mattresses, and in many cases, it boils down to the quality of the materials used to construct the mattress.

Ozone-Depleting Materials – The first is ozone-depleting materials. While these chemicals don’t necessarily have a direct negative health effect on your body, they have a seriously harmful impact on the environment. If you weren’t aware, the ozone layer is part of the naturally-occurring layers of the atmosphere. Its main job is to protect us from the harmful rays of the sun, so we don’t want it to go anywhere anytime soon. While most uses of ozone depleting materials ceased in the 90s, some manufacturers still use them. Nectar doesn’t use any materials that cause the ozone layer to deplete. That means that your good night’s sleep never comes at the expense of the planet’s protections.

Toxic Flame Retardants – Back in the 60s, politicians concerned about beds catching fire required that mattresses pass certain flammability tests before they could be sold to the public. In order to achieve this, mattresses were created using flame retardants known as PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEPs, which have now been deemed as unhealthy. As it turns out, they cause major health issues such as cancer, asthma, headaches, skin irritation, allergic reactions, nasal congestion and more. Nectar is aware of this. According to their CertiPUR-US certification, there is no inclusion of toxic flame retardants as part of the manufacturing process.

Mercury and Other Heavy Metals – While heavy metals aren’t a major component in modern mattresses, it’s good practice to make sure they aren’t included. Heavy metals such as mercury or lead can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, chills, weakness, shortness of breath and tingling sensations. Nectar mattresses pass rigorous testing that can detect even trace amounts of heavy metals, ensuring that you aren’t exposed to anything harmful.

Formaldehyde – Who guessed that the same materials used to preserve organic materials can also be harmful? Cynicism aside, Formaldehyde is a major contributor to low air quality, increased cancer risk, alongside a negative effect on the ability of your nervous system to function properly. We don’t want this in our mattresses and Nectar understands this. According to their CertiPUR-US certification, there is no inclusion of formaldehyde in the manufacturing process.

Low VOC Emissions – Many consumer products release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) when they are exposed to the air, and foam mattresses are notoriously problematic in this regard. VOCs can cause respiratory, immune and allergy issues over long periods of exposure. Considering the percentage of your life spent in bed, this is a very important matter to consider. Nectar mattresses are rated as having very low VOC emissions.

Safe Materials in the Nectar Mattress

As our name suggests, our mission is to find the best mattress online, and safety is a major part of your quest to a perfect night’s sleep. Compared to older mattresses, there’s absolutely no competition. Since many of the materials detailed above have only recently been discovered to be so harmful, you’re most likely currently sleeping on a mattress that includes them, at least partially. In this case, upgrading might be the best idea! While the Nectar mattress is definitely safe and recommended, there are plenty of high-quality mattress makers that also maintain safe manufacturing practices.
